Workers Speak Out v. Cuomo’s Bill

Thanks to everyone who came out to last Tuesday’s Town Hall meeting, sponsored by Coalition for a Real Minimum Wage Increase and the Cardozo Labor & Employment Law Society! We were joined by over 200 workers and supporters, including NMASS members, Coalition members, students, organizations and churches.

Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal spoke that night about her recently introduced legislation that would make it more possible for workers to collect their stolen wages. Senator Jose Peralta spoke about his bill to repeal the corporate subsidy included in Cuomo’s new minimum-wage bill.

Many workers came forward to speak out against Cuomo’s minimum wage bill, calling for other workers to come out and fight.

Nancy Reyes called the increase to $9.00 an hour “a joke because it’s not enough for us to survive.” She added that “many of us have to work double shifts to survive, especially as a single mother.”

Maggie Martinez, has been looking for a job for 5 years. As a worker over 50, she sees that “Cuomo’s subsidies to corporations to hire students,” ages 16-19 “will jeopardize older workers” in dire need of a job.

Vincent Cao and his 25 co-workers were robbed of wages. They filed a lawsuit against their boss and won a judgment in court. However, the boss had shut down, and transferred his assets. Vincent said the judgment was a useless piece of paper because “we can’t collect a penny.”

The meeting wrapped up as some suggested that we take the fight to Cuomo in Albany!

We need you to join the fight! Come Plan with us!
